Every Poppy Tells a Story
On 23 July 2026, Dreamscape Community Connections C.I.C. launched Turn Heanor and Surrounding Areas Red – Every Poppy Tells a Story.
The campaign aims to bring individuals, families, schools, care homes, businesses and community groups together to create and display:
11,111 handmade poppies
The poppies will form part of community displays, activities and a remembrance trail across Heanor and surrounding areas.
Each poppy can represent a life, a family, a memory or a personal act of remembrance.
How the community can take part
People can support the campaign by:
- Pledging to make poppies
- Joining a community poppy-making session
- Making poppies independently
- Donating clean recycled materials
- Hosting a Poppy Point collection location
- Providing space for a completed display
- Volunteering with the campaign
- Sharing the project with others
Poppies can be made using many different materials and methods, meaning people of different ages and abilities can participate in a way that works for them.
Recycling for remembrance
We are also encouraging the community to save clean and safe materials that could be transformed into poppies and decorations, including:
- Plastic bottles and bottle tops
- Plastic spoons
- Cardboard boxes and tubes
- Egg boxes
- Clean tins and cans
- Clean jars and tubs
Materials can be donated anytime between the campaign launch and the end of October 2026.
A community remembrance trail
The completed poppies will help turn Heanor and surrounding areas red in the lead-up to Remembrance.
A digital remembrance trail is also being developed, helping people discover participating venues, poppy displays and community stories.
The campaign is supported by the Royal British Legion Heanor Branch alongside local groups, businesses and members of the community.
By working together, we hope to create a meaningful tribute that brings people together while giving everyone an opportunity to take part in remembrance.
The campaign began on 23 July 2026, but every new pledge, handmade poppy and donated material will help the project continue to grow.
